What is SmartLipo?

How does SmartLiopo work?
SmartLipo uses laser technology to melt and liquefy fat cells.  In addition, it smoothens and tightens the skin to decrease the looseness that can sometimes be seen with traditional liposuction. It can be utilized alone to treat smaller areas of fat, such as elbows or chin or in combination with micro-cannula liposuction to remove larger areas of fat such as in the abdomen, flanks, and thighs. The laser actually ruptures fat cells and the resulting oily, liquid substance is then removed through a tiny incision in the skin by the surgeon using liposuction. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding, and bruising than traditional liposuction.

Is SmartLipo performed in a hospital?
No. SmartLipo can be performed in a comfortable office-based clinic setting by a qualified surgeon in a sterile environment.
 
Will I be under general anesthesia?
It is no longer a requirement that patients be put to sleep using general anesthetic. Localized tumescent anesthesia is administered and the surgeon/staff make sure you are comfortable at all times.  You may feel pressure but not pain.
 
What does the actual SmartLipo laser do?
A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin.  The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser energy to the fat cells causing them to rupture and easily drain away.  The laser energy also interacts with the dermis resulting in collagen shrinkage and therefore enhances skin tightening.
 
Is there discomfortant during treatment?
During SmartLIPO there is little discomfort.  You may feel some stinging at injection sites and some minimum tugging. After the anesthesia has worn off, it may feel like the aches and pains that might follow a vigorous workout.  This is unlike traditional liposuction in which a patient might feel severe soreness and a great deal of bruising for weeks.
 
How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, typically only one treatment is required.  The session may last from 1 to 1 ½ hours for each area treated.

Does SmartLipo help elminiate cellulite?
The procedure will improve the body's shape and may improve cellulite to a certain degree in helping tighten sagging skin.  But one must be realistic in understanding that cellulite also has a lot to do with one’s genetics.

What is the downtime after SMARTLIPO?
Healing varies from person to person and mild soreness, swelling, and bruising are to be expected. Although you may feel strong enough to return to work or normal activities very soon after the procedure, we recommend taking a few days off to fully rest and recover.
 
What is post-operative homecare like?
You will be able to return home 1 to 2 hours after your SmartLipo procedure. You will need to purchase compression garments to wear which are a crucial part of the recovery process.  Compression helps heal by preventing the affected tissues from shifting after the procedure.   
 
Following surgery, your doctor may suggest a bit of movement in the next days to promote circulation, but limited to only minor activity.  In the days after, you will be reminded not to take any anti-inflammatory medicines or blood thinners like Aspirin.  It is also recommended that you do not smoke for few days after the procedure.
 
When can I expect to see final results?
Although some results can be seen immediately, it is not unusual to have swelling for a couple of weeks. You will see continued improvement over several months.  Skin is almost "normal' looking after 3 months. It is important to understand that you should continue with a balanced diet and exercise to help maintain your new look.
